ABOUT

Indro is the top bassist in Indonesia, known as a solo artist, educator, and member of Halmahera and Simakdialog. He has also worked with Eric Marienthal, Victor Wooten and many others.

Indro Hardjodikoro was born in Jakarta in 1968, and inspired by his brother Manto, started making music in the third grade. Teaching himself, he joined a vocal group as percussionist, and then started singing and playing guitar and harmonica. After that he moved on to bass. His enthusiasm for double bass intensified when he met Bintang Indrianto, but studies continued with Indra Lesmana, Erwin Gutawa and saxophonist Maryono.

Indro met Tohpati Ethnomission in PMMC (Yamaha) and formed a band called Halmahera. The two have collaborated on many projects and recordings including the band Simakdialog. Indro has also played and recorded with Earth Music (with Australian percussionist Ron Reeves, Indra Lesmana, Cendi Luntungan and saxophonist Arif), and many other top singers in Indonesia, bringing his own style and colour to a wide variety of music.

Now Indro is now considered the top bassist in Indonesia. He appears often on TV, on Indonesian Idol and many other music programs. He has played with most of the big orchestras in Indonesia, including Erwin Gutawa, Adi MS in Twilite Orchestra, and Magenta Orchestra (with Andi Rianto). He has played with the Dwiki Dharmawan band in the US and China, and also Dwiki’s World Peace Orchestra (with Andy Suzuki, Steve Thornton, Sadao Watanabe, Roger Burns and Tolak Aulstead).

Indro toured Indonesia with Eric Marienthal in 1997 and has worked with such international musicians as Kenny Garrett, Dave Koz, Michael Lington and Michael Colina. He conducted a master class in rhythm and groove with Victor Wooten and has performed with Herbie Hancock, George Duke, and Mattias “IA” Eklundh. He has recorded with Ernie Adams, Howard Levi, Frank Gambale, Sheila Madjid, Bob Sheppard, and Dira J. Sugandi (on an album produced by Bluey from the band Incognito).

Indro recently released his first debut album, “Feels Free”, which also features Demas Narawangsa, Lal Intje Makkah, Tohpati, Oele Patiselano and Irfan Chasmala.

Indro is active as an educator, and in addition to teaching privately and conducting master classes, he is the head of the Bass Department at Institute Music Indonesia (IMI), the first contemporary music institute in Indonesia (established in 2001).
